The No Poo Method - The Ultimate Zero Waste Hair Care
Bottled shampoos and conditioners add a huge amount of plastics to our world wide plastic problem. Is it necessary? No it really isn’t, with a huge range of zero waste solid shampoo bars on the market, there really is an eco friendly choice for every hair type. Is there a MORE zero waste way to wash your hair? Well yes, it’s No-Poo. If you look past the rather amusing name and look at the benefits, it’s easy to see when there is a growing No-Poo movement. No-Poo is simply shampoo free hair, and some with gorgeous shiny locks claim it’s their secret.
Hair contains a natural oil in its follicles called sebum. Sebum is essential for keeping itself conditioned and healthy. Washing your hair often can strip away the sebum leaving your hair dry and brittle. Some bottled shampoos contain some rather harsh chemicals which really magnify the hair stripping. Then of course with the dried out stripped hair follicles, you will need conditioner to fix it. Essentially you need conditioner and serums to replace the oils that the shampoo has removed. So why remove them in the first place? That is where we start to talk about the No-Poo method.
When you wash your hair more often, you find you actually NEED to wash your hair more often. Somebody who washes their hair every day may find their hair is quite oily within 24 hours. Some of those that have never washed their hair that often may not have any greasy look to their hair for a week or more. The theory behind the No-Poo method is that washing your hair with a gentle alternative to shampoo, from just water, to baking soda or apple cider vinegar you will end up with clean hair without the damage of stripping the oils, and remove the necessity to wash your hair as often. After a sometimes rather tricky transitional period, your hair and scalp reached a natural equilibrium. The duration of this transitional period depends on your hair, and how dependent you previously were on shampoo. It’s not all plain sailing for some. There are transitional periods that vary from short and successful, to long and torturous ones that require some perseverance and dedication.
To embark on the No-Poo method, you need to be prepared for a few weeks of less than perfect looking hair while your scalp readjusts to this new regime. Many that have survived this transitional period are rewarded with glossy (not oily!) softer, fuller hair and a dandruff free scalp. You can go cold turkey with the shampoo, and while the transition to No-Poo may be rougher, it might actually be quicker in the long run. Others choose a more gradual process and start weaning themselves off slowly. Washing their hair gradually less often, until finally going for it properly. When I say properly, I mean water only, or with baking soda and apple cider vinegar. Daily brushing helps to evenly distribute hair's natural oils throughout the hair, and helps to prevent buildup around the follicle.
Dandruff can be problematic and sometimes embarrassing. The itching and flaking associated with dandruff can be incredibly annoying, and the itching can lead others to think that perhaps you have little creepy crawlers lurking in your hair. With the No-Poo method you can effectively eliminate dandruff. Research has shown that water, baking soda and apple cider vinegar can be used to control dandruff. Natural products such as Coconut Oil, Fenugreek Seeds, Rosehip, White Vinegar, Olive Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Lemon Juice and even crushed Aspirin have helped many people get their annoying dandruff problem under control.
